Celebrated but recently disgraced Swedish cop Jonas Engstrom (Stellan Skarsgard) and his partner Erik Vik (Sverre Anker Ousdal) are transferred to northern Norway, the land of the midnight sun, to help the local police investigate the brutal murder of a beautiful young girl. Having set up the killer in a stakeout of the murder scene, in thick fog they pursue their suspect who manages to shoot and wound one of the other policeman. In the ensuing confusion, a panicked Engstrom accidentally shoots and kills Erik. Realising his fatal error, Engstrom attempts to cover up the incident by blaming the murder suspect for the killing and over the following days manipulates the evidence relating to Erik's death more and more elaborately. Events take on a bizarre twist when the killer contacts Engstrom and reveals he witnessed him shooting his partner. With his senses disturbed by sleeplessness caused by both guilt and the constant daylight, Engstrom struggles to maintain his cool while taking part in a dangerous and complex battle of wits with his nemesis.
